The functions that religion or religious identity perform in the public sphere have been made vastly more complicated as a result of globalization. The chapter explores the impact of globalization on our understanding of religion and the relationship of religious beliefs, practices, and communities to one another and to political authority. A final section of the chapter takes up the case of India in order to illustrate the complex relationship between religious pluralism, globalization, and world politics in the contemporary era.
