Funding Scholarship on Religion and Spirituality

An interactive workshop series for scholars in Africa and Latin America

Are you seeking funding from international grantmakers for your research project on religion and spirituality? Are you looking for some advice about how to create a proposal that will catch the attention of funders?

The Social Science Research Council is looking to support the growth of an international cohort of scholars of religion and spirituality by offering two workshops on how to find funding for research on religion and spirituality in the social sciences.

The two-hour workshops are aimed at scholars in the Global South: one for scholars in Latin America, and another for scholars in Africa. They are designed to give attendees practical training in how to find grants from European and North American grantmakers, develop a clear research question, craft a compelling proposal, and navigate the application process. Attendees will also complete an exercise to help refine their pitch.

The workshops will be led by Dr. Nicholas Gibson, who will draw from his experience as a funder of research on religion and spirituality to provide participants with an in-depth view of the elements that make for a successful grant application: finding potential sources of funding from private and public grantmakers in Europe and North America, designing a research project, finding collaborators, and writing grant applications.

Schedule:

Two workshops will be held:

For Latin American scholars: October 8, 11 am – 1 pm EDT (UTC-4)

For African scholars: October 9, 9 am-11 am EDT (UTC-4)

To Apply:

The webinar is open to doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, university faculty, or professional researchers working at an accredited educational institution located in either Latin America or Africa. As the workshop is geared toward scholars with a research interest in religion and spirituality, we ask that applicants explain their research interests in the field.

The webinar is open to applicants from all fields in the social sciences, humanities, and theology, including but not limited to anthropology, economics, ethics, geography, history, political science, psychology, religious studies, and sociology. All application materials must be submitted in English.
