Pratap Bhanu Mehta

Visiting Professor, Princeton University

Pratap Bhanu Mehta is a senior fellow of the Centre for Policy Research, New Delhi, and Laurance S. Rockefeller Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University. He was previously vice chancellor of Ashoka University and president of the Centre for Policy Research. He has published widely on intellectual history, Indian constitutional law, political theory, and international affairs. He is the author of The Burden of Democracy (Penguin, 2003) and has produced several edited volumes. He is coeditor, with Devesh Kapur, of Public Institutions in India (Oxford University Press, 2007); with Niraja Jayal, The Oxford Companion to Politics in India (Oxford University Press, 2011); and, with Madhav Khosla and Sujit Choudhary, of The Oxford Handbook of the Indian Constitution (Oxford University Press, 2016). He is also an honorary fellow of St. John’s College, University of Oxford, and a fellow of the British Academy. He was a Social Science Research Council Fellow in 2020.

Upcoming Projects: Dr. Mehta is working on a manuscript on ideas of religion and global political thought in India in the twentieth century.
