This forum grows out of the “Digital Technology and Online Spiritual Communities” workshop hosted by the SSRC in November 2024, where scholars explored the deepening reliance of religious communities on digital media and its implications for spiritual practice. Drawing on insights from fourteen contributors across religious traditions, the forum presents a “Call to Action and Reflection on Technology and the Future of Spiritual Communities” that highlights ethical concerns about the integration of emerging technologies into spiritual life. Essays from four participants further examine themes such as authority, ritual, institutional diversity, and design ethics, inviting sustained dialogue on the future of digital religion.
